Protologue Description: Cestrum darcyanum Sawyer, sp. nov.

TYPE: VENEZUELA. Trujillo: Parque Nacional Guaramacal, Quebrada El Pollo, Boconó, S of the cloud forest, 2200 m, 5 Feb 1996, Benítez & Rojas 5478 (HOLOTYPE: MY; ISOTYPES: CONN, MO, PORT, VEN).

Cestro microcalyci Francey similis sed his notulis diversa: ramorum foliorum pubes dendritica; folia bulata, venis supra impressis, subtus elevatis; corolla longior; filamenta per 4-5 mm libera, basi geniculatotumida; calyx fructusque majores.

Shrubs or small trees, 6-8 m tall, branched, the branches slender and lax, somewhat angular when young, terete when mature, pubescent with dark, dendritic trichomes; petioles 1.2-2 cm long, covered with dendritic trichomes; leaves firmly chartaceous, undulate, 9-15 X 2.5-4.5 cm, narrowly elliptic, glabrous except for dendritic trichomes 0.7-1.5 mm across with branches 0.3-0.9 mm long on the veins and the surface beneath, the secondary veins 69 on each side, extending to the margin, there looping and uniting, appressed above, elevated beneath, the apex abruptly acuminate, the base cuneate; minor leaves lacking. Inflorescence a lax, axillary, pedunculate panicle, 5-10 cm; peduncle 1.5-3.5 cm; bracts 1.5 mm, linear. Flowers sessile; calyx drying dark brown, tubular, 3.5-4.5 X ca. 3.5 mm, externally glabrous, apical half pubescent within, lobes 5, 1 X 1 mm; corolla green, purplish toward the apex, 14.5-17 mm long; tube 12-14.5 mm, gradually expanded apically, the throat 2-4 mm diam.; lobes 5, 2.5-3 mm long, ovate, the apex acute, the margin short pilose; stamens ca. 13 mm; filaments adnate for 8-9 mm, the adnate portion pubescent, the free portion immediately above the point of insertion distended and geniculate; anthers ovate, 11.5 mm diam.; ovary 1 mm diam., glabrous; ovules 6-8; style ca. 15 mm long, stigma bilobed. Fruit a subglobose, dark purple berry 6-6.5 X 6-7 mm, the pericarp thin, seeds 2-3. 5-6 mm long, light brown.

Name derivation: The specific epithet is offered in recognition of Dr. William G. D'Arcy of the Missouri Botanical Garden, a prolific and indefatigable researcher and generous individual whose contributions to the biogeography, biology, and taxonomy of the Solanaceae are an inspiration to all who are fortunate enough to know him.
